Transnational Access in 2012

Description of the infrastructure

UMSC is a modern field laboratory with a total building area of 2800 m2, situated 40 km south of Umeå, close to the sea shore in the northern part (63°N latitude) of the brackish Baltic Sea. UMSC has modern, well equipped wet and dry laboratories, two large aquarium halls with three separate running seawater systems with adjustable temperature, walk-in cold rooms, and different special laboratories.

UMSC hosts a unique mesocosm facility in an indoor hall, comprising 12 insulated 5 m height cylindrical tanks, fully computer controlled, with possibilities to simulate different hydrographic and light conditions, including ice-covered winter situations. Several laboratories with instrumentation for different chemical and biological analyses are available for researchers, as well as an auditorium for ca 50 persons, a classroom laboratory and a library.

There is also a boarding house with 22 beds and facilities for own preparation of meals. A 46-m research vessel with laboratories mainly for work in the pelagic environment is contracted from the coastguard by UMSC. There is also a 16-m water-jet ship, especially suitable for work in shallow waters, and several small boats available for researchers. UMSC is connected to several departments at the campus in Umeå, including the department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences, the department of Chemistry, and the department of Molecular Biology. These connections give access to other analytical facilities within e.g. environmental and analytical chemistry and molecular biology, as well as a broad network, including 3900 employees and 29000 students.

Services currently offered by the infrastructure: During mesocosm experiments there will be one technician and one scientist allocated to support the research group. Well trained technicians will maintain the complicated control system for the mesocosm towers and make necessary adjustments during operation. In addition, UMSC provides the usual logistic support that is needed at work, including office space, library, internet access, phone etc.. Access to boats and the fast, 16 m shallow going research vessel is also possible, i.e. for collection of material for mesocosm experiments. Guests can get inexpensive housing at the dormitory of UMSC. It is also possible to use a boarding house in the nearby small town Hörnefors.

Transnational Access in 2012

The mesocosm facility at Umeå Marine Science Center (UMSC) is open for Transnational Access activities from January to July 2012 for new scientific ideas that can be tested in mesocosm experiments.

see open time slots in CALENDAR 2012

Please contact Prof. Ulf Båmstedt, Umeå University, ulf.bamstedt@emg.umu.se for more information.

For more information on practical questions of Transnational Access activities, please contact the local MESOAQUA site coordinator Dr. Elin Lindehoff at Umeå University (elin.lindehoff@emg.umu.se).

The application deadline for MESOAQUA Transnational Access was 30 September 2011, 12:00 CET. The applications are currently in review process by the independent SAB.

The total amount of access provided for this site and call will be up to 100-200 person-days. Anticipated funding is thus 1 or 2 cooperating GROUPS, possibly combined with a few (typically 1-3) INDIVIDUAL applications for the site in total. Expected duration of the activities is between 3-4 weeks per activity. See information on Transnational Access and the description of for GROUP and INDIVIDUAL applications.

Modality of access under MESOAQUA:
UMSC offers open access to all the infrastructure facilities in the field station for accepted visiting scientists. Groups of 10 to 15 visiting scientists over 30 days can work on their own independent projects, with the mesocosm hall and adjacent laboratory solely defined for use by the research group. In addition, smaller groups are welcome to join potential ongoing research projects at UMSC.
